How to Support your child at Jack Hunt School

The information below outlines some practical ways you can support your son / daughter with their education at Jack Hunt School. Talking to them on a daily basis about their lessons, subject content, clubs and activities is a great way of keeping an awareness of what is happening at school.

Make sure you are signed up to the EduLink One App and check this every day for messages and homework.

Routines

Create a good structure of routines at home, for example, ensuring everything is ready for school the night before. Help them with managing and planning time effectively, ensure there is a discussion every evening about homework (check EduLink), and it is completed in good time, so deadlines are not missed.

Homework

Check every day (EduLink) that homework has been set and provide a space and time for it to be completed to the best standard possible. Create the right study environment - any well-lit, comfortable, and quiet space with the necessary supplies will do, and Wi-Fi access if possible. Avoid distractions, like a TV in the background. Set a start, finish and break time – this can reduce stress. Be interested - look at the completed work but do not be tempted to offer the correct answers or complete the work yourself.

Reading for Pleasure

Encourage daily reading at home. Evidence suggests that there is a positive relationship between reading frequency, reading enjoyment and attainment. A growing number of studies show that promoting reading can have a major impact on children and adults and their future, including: reading attainment and writing ability; text comprehension and grammar; breadth of vocabulary; positive reading attitudes; greater self-confidence as well as general knowledge.

Clubs and Activities

At the start of each term lunchtime and after-school clubs are published. There is a huge range of activities which can help to reinforce learning, develop or learn a new skill, gain support for homework and meet new people. Please discuss clubs and activities with your son / daughter and encourage participation.

Parents’ Evenings

It is important to attend these. Information will be sent out via Edulink. The evening is a great way to gain a deeper understanding of how well your son / daughter is doing in school. It is also a great opportunity for you to ask questions about how you can provide additional support at home.

iPad (Year 10 to Year 13)

Students in these groups all have access to an iPad to support their learning. Please reinforce the expectation to use them in a responsible way and ensure they are fully charged every evening at home (including their iPad pen).

Sleep

Children need the right amount of sleep to be alert and ready to learn all day. Most secondary school age children need at least nine hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep can make it hard for children to pay attention in class. A regular bedtime routine, especially on school nights, is important. Limit stimulating activities before bedtime, like TV, video games, internet access and make the bedroom a screen-free zone.
