Jack Hunt Students Take Part in 2026 Katherine of Aragon Festival

Jack Hunt Academy was proud to be represented at this year’s Katherine of Aragon Festival, with three students attending the commemorative service at Peterborough Cathedral alongside Spanish teacher Mr Mayacen.

The annual festival, organised by Peterborough Cathedral, celebrates the life and legacy of Katherine of Aragon, the first wife of King Henry VIII, who is laid to rest at the Cathedral. The event brings together local schools, community organisations and visitors to recognise an important part of Peterborough’s heritage through a programme of lectures, services and cultural activities.

The commemorative service, held on Friday 30 January, honoured Queen Katherine at her final resting place and was conducted by The Dean of Peterborough, The Very Reverend Christopher Dalliston. The service was attended by a number of distinguished guests, including the Spanish Ambassador to the UK, Emma Aparici Vazquez de Parga, alongside local dignitaries, faith leaders and representatives from across the region.

Jack Hunt Academy students played an important role in the service and represented the school exceptionally well. Gianmarco delivered an outstanding reading of a poem in Spanish, showcasing both confidence and linguistic skill. Our Year 7 students were also given the honour of lighting ceremonial candles and laying wreaths and pomegranates at Katherine’s memorial. The pomegranate, Katherine’s personal emblem, symbolises her Spanish heritage, fertility and royal status.

The service formed part of a wider week of celebrations at the Cathedral, which included a Tudor banquet, history lectures, family tours and cultural workshops. During the service, students from local schools shared readings and reflections on Katherine’s life, alongside hymns, prayers and extracts from her letters and diaries.

The Spanish Ambassador highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Katherine of Aragon, noting the enduring relationship between Spain and the UK and reflecting on Katherine’s strength, dignity and legacy.

Jack Hunt Academy is extremely proud to have taken part in this important community event, helping students deepen their understanding

of local history, culture and international links with Spain.
